Ghana SHS Selection Process Kicks Off

Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Education Service (GES) has launched the 2024 Senior High School (SHS) selection process for Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates. This exercise, which began on August 28, 2024, will continue until September 4, 2024.

This year, over 570,000 candidates who took the BECE will participate in the selection process. These students can choose from a variety of Senior High Schools, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, and specialized programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Key Highlights of the Selection Process
  1. Selection Options: Candidates can select up to eleven schools, divided into two sets. The first set includes six schools, while the second set, known as Cluster schools, includes five.

  2. School Categories: Schools are grouped into four main categories. Candidates can select one school from Category A, two from Category B, and up to five from Category C. The sixth choice must be a compulsory day school or a special boarding school.
  3. Specialized Programs: Candidates interested in technical, vocational, or STEM programs can select all their choices from the respective categories.
  4. Confirmation of Choices: For the first time, candidates can confirm their school choices via a short code, ensuring transparency and accuracy in the selection process.

Parental Involvement and Support

The GES has stressed the importance of parental involvement in the selection process. Parents and guardians are encouraged to actively participate to ensure their wards make informed decisions that align with their academic strengths and career aspirations.

Ensuring a Smooth Process

To ensure a smooth selection process, GES officials will oversee the exercise nationwide. Regional Directors of Education have been instructed to inform all stakeholders about the selection dates and procedures. Additionally, two phone lines have been provided to assist parents, students, and stakeholders with any challenges they may encounter.

The 2024 SHS selection process is a crucial step in shaping the educational journey of BECE candidates. With new measures to enhance transparency and parental involvement, the GES aims to ensure a fair and efficient placement process for all students.
